Log Off to Switch On: The Rise of the Digital Detox Escape

Spring shows up with big “fresh start” energy — longer days, a bit of sun (finally), and that urge to get outside and shake off the winter fog. But somehow, life doesn’t always get the memo. Calendars fill up, notifications keep pinging, and even a “break” can feel suspiciously like more stuff to keep up with. No wonder more people are craving something simpler: a proper switch-off.

So instead of another busy getaway, they’re choosing something quieter. Think less scrolling, more slow mornings. Less plans, more presence.

That’s where Unplugged comes in. It’s the UK’s original digital detox retreat, and the concept is refreshingly straightforward: three days in nature, phone locked away, and time that actually feels like your own again. Whether it’s a solo escape, a low-key couple’s trip, or just a much-needed reset after a hectic start to the year, it’s become a go-to for anyone ready to properly log off.

The cabins are dotted across peaceful countryside spots in the UK (and now Spain), all within easy reach of major cities. They’re off-grid but still feel like a treat — think floor-to-ceiling windows, solar power, and cosy interiors that blend into the landscape. Inside, there’s everything needed for a comfortable stay: a proper kitchen, soft linen bedding, a log burner, hot shower, fire pit, and a stash of books, maps, and games.

But the fun part? The analogue touches. Guests get a Polaroid camera (film included), an old-school Nokia for emergencies, and even a few Calm Sleep Stories on cassette — with familiar voices like Harry Styles and Matthew McConaughey making an appearance. It’s low-key nostalgic in the best way.

At the heart of it all is the 72-hour digital detox — a sweet spot backed by research for actually feeling the benefits. People come back talking about deeper sleep, clearer heads, less anxiety, and that rare feeling of being properly present. For anyone dealing with screen fatigue, burnout, or just too much noise, it’s like hitting reset.

It’s also part of a bigger shift. Travel is starting to look less like ticking off destinations and more like actually feeling good. After a strong 2024, Unplugged is growing fast, with plans to expand to 60 cabins by the end of 2025. Locations span everywhere from near London and Manchester to Devon, Cornwall, Wales, the New Forest, and the Chiltern Hills — close enough to get to easily, but far enough to feel like a different world.

At the centre of it all are founders Hector Hughes and Ben Elliot, two lifelong friends who built Unplugged after experiencing burnout firsthand. What started as a simple idea — making it easier for people to step away from their screens — has turned into something much bigger. Today, it’s helping thousands of people reconnect with themselves, one offline weekend at a time.

So, what’s next? Pick a cabin, set the out-of-office, and disappear for a few days. No endless plans, no pressure — just fresh air, slower mornings, and the kind of quiet that actually sticks with you after you leave.
