Meet Balham’s Monster Brunch

Weekends in Balham are about to get a whole lot louder as Freak Scene unleashes its brand-new Monster Brunch from Saturday 15 August.

Dreamed up by former Nobu London head chef Scott Hallsworth, the punk-Asian hotspot is serving up a brunch that’s anything but ordinary. Running every Saturday and Sunday until 20 December, Monster Brunch pairs Freak Scene’s bold Japanese and Southeast Asian flavours with banging tunes, welcome drinks and plenty of good vibes courtesy of a live DJ.

Brunch-goers have two ways to play. The £35 Monster Brunch brings a family-style feast, a welcome drink and the soundtrack to get the weekend started. Fancy turning things up another notch? The £45 Monster Free-Flow throws in 90 minutes of unlimited Prosecco, beer and selected cocktails. Just don’t leave booking until the last minute, as prices jump by £5 within seven days of your visit.

The feast begins with DIY temaki, letting diners roll their own hand rolls with spicy tuna, salmon tartare or avocado, before the table fills with Freak Scene favourites. Think juicy izakaya sliders, crispy pumpkin croquettes, smoky chicken kushiyaki and barbecue prawns swimming in fragrant laksa, all made for sharing.

There are plenty of sides to keep everyone happy too, from garlic fried rice and house pickles to grilled hispi cabbage loaded with ponzu, brown butter, truffle and dried miso. It’s a spread built for passing plates, stealing bites and arguing over the last croquette.

Monster Brunch runs across two sittings each day, from 12pm to 1.30pm and again from 2pm to 3.30pm, making it easy to fit around lazy lie-ins or afternoon plans.

Planning a birthday, reunion or just an excuse to get everyone together? Freak Scene has that covered too, with spaces for everything from intimate gatherings to full venue takeovers, complete with bespoke menus to keep the party going.
