Lunch at The Cadogan Arms feels like stepping into one of those places that instantly gets it right. Living in East London means I don’t often find myself heading over to the south west without a very good reason, but this turned out to be exactly that. Sitting along King’s Road, it has that perfect mix of polished pub energy and neighbourhood comfort, where you could just as easily settle in for a quick bite as you could lose an entire afternoon.
The interiors set the tone straight away. Think warm wood, soft lighting, and a buzz that feels lively without ever tipping into chaos. It has that rare quality of feeling both elevated and completely relaxed, like a proper local that just happens to do everything very well.

We started light, or at least that was the intention. Oysters to begin, fresh and briny, the kind that don’t need much more than a squeeze of lemon to shine. Alongside them, asparagus with romesco and almonds brought something a little richer, a bit nutty, a bit smoky, and just indulgent enough to hint at what was coming next.

Then the mains arrived, and things escalated in the best way. The fish and chips were exactly what you want them to be, crisp batter, flaky fish, and golden chips that somehow disappear faster than expected. But the real standout was the whole ham hock. It landed on the table looking impressive, and it absolutely delivered. The meat was so tender it practically fell off the bone at the slightest nudge, rich and deeply savoury, paired with a fried egg and chips that made it feel unapologetically hearty. It was the kind of dish you don’t finish out of politeness, but because you physically can’t. A doggy bag was not optional, it was essential.
Drinks kept pace with the food. A spicy margarita that actually had a proper kick, not just a token hint of heat, followed by a paloma that was bright and refreshing. The Alvarinho worked perfectly with everything, crisp enough to cut through the richness. And because leaving without a final flourish wasn’t an option, an old fashioned and a negroni rounded things off, strong, classic, and exactly what the moment called for.
What really lingers, though, is the atmosphere. There’s a genuine local feel here, the kind of place where people greet each other, settle in, and stay longer than planned. It manages to feel special without being showy, which is harder to pull off than it sounds, and more than enough to justify crossing the city for.
