I finally made it to Hoppers in Shoreditch, and honestly… the hype is very real. This is their fourth spot now, which usually makes me a bit sceptical because expansion can sometimes water things down, but not here. The flavours are just as punchy, rich and addictive as everyone says.
We went for the £15 lunch deal, slightly unsure if it would actually fill us up (because let’s be honest, “lunch deals” can sometimes mean tiny portions and big disappointment). But this one completely delivers. You get a tasting spread that somehow manages to feel generous and exciting at the same time. The Lankan Chicken Kiri was creamy and deeply spiced, the Deviled Paneer had that perfect balance of heat and sweetness, and the Cheese Dosa… crispy, buttery, and basically impossible to stop eating. Add in the chutneys and everything just ties together in that messy, delicious, scoop-and-dip kind of way.
We did that thing where you say “let’s just add a couple of small plates” and suddenly the table is overflowing. The Prawn Paniyaram came out golden and crisp on the outside, soft and fluffy inside, packed with flavour. And the Hot Butter Squid? Absolute standout. Sticky, spicy, slightly sweet, with just the right amount of heat that keeps you going back for more even when you’re already full.
By this point we realised the £15 deal alone would have been more than enough, but no regrets because everything was so good.
We also tried the Mango Spritz, which was ridiculously refreshing. Light, slightly floral from the jasmine honey, with that bright hit of yuzu and the sweetness of mango cutting through perfectly. It’s one of those drinks you could easily have a few of without even noticing.
The space itself is just as considered as the food. It’s got this cool, modern feel but with loads of warmth, inspired by Sri Lankan homes and coastal cafés. It feels relaxed but still special enough to make it an occasion.
And the service? Spot on. Attentive without hovering, friendly without overdoing it. The kind of place where everything just flows really easily.
I walked in curious and left completely sold. If this is what their expansion looks like, they’re doing something very right and I am delighted it is right on my doorstep.
