First published back in 1994, Sam McBratney’s much-loved story—beautifully illustrated by Anita Jeram—has become a quiet global phenomenon, selling over 61 million copies and translated into dozens of languages. Decades later, the gentle back-and-forth between Little and Big Nutbrown Hare still tugs at the heart, and this playful afternoon tea brings that same warmth to the table.
Running from up to 19 April (Friday to Sunday, 12–4pm), the experience unfolds like the pages of the book itself. The sweet selection is where things really come to life: think a whisker-tipped hare biscuit that feels almost too cute to eat, and a miniature wildflower meadow layered with rhubarb confit, wild honey panna cotta and cocoa soil. There’s a rich chocolate orange tree stump, and a dreamy lychee and rose “cloud” finished with a moon motif—a subtle nod to that unforgettable line about loving someone “to the moon… and back.”
Savouries hold their own, too. A smooth duck terrine comes with brioche toast, while a prawn cocktail is tucked neatly into a crisp pastry puff. Classic finger sandwiches keep things grounded—chicken with asparagus and mayo, alongside a vibrant beetroot and goat’s cheese option that feels very spring. And of course, no afternoon tea would be complete without warm scones, generously served with Cornish clotted cream and strawberry jam.
Tea comes courtesy of JING, with the option to add a glass of prosecco if you’re feeling celebratory. Little ones aren’t left out either—they get their own selection of bite-sized treats, plus hot chocolate or juice, making the whole thing feel properly special.
And just when you think it couldn’t be any sweeter, each child leaves with a Nutbrown Hare soft toy and a copy of the book—a thoughtful touch that keeps the story going long after the last crumb is gone.
